Now Gerard is the SK’s heart? How does that even work? At least pernida’s real form was a hand as expected, Gerard isn’t anything like a heart. How was the SK even living without a heart? Plus why are there bits and pieces of him all around? We’ve not even seen his legs yet. Anyway, Bach has quite a lot of potential from this. We already saw how much power he attained from absorbing Mimihagi which was just the right hand. When pernida and Gerard die, that’s like tripling his already insane amount of power. Just how powerful was the SK anyway and how did he even get for the helpless state we saw him in? There’s still a lot d stuff missing.
So I’m assuming yoruichi has now mastered shunko. Back when she fought sui-feng, she made the point that she hasn’t mastered it yet. It’s quite powerful but it obviously wouldn’t be enough. Not sure why Askin’s ability didn’t work on her. She should have been within his range. Also, if yoruichi is going to fight askin, hopefully she’ll finally use her zan. We don’t even have the faintest idea of its ability.

I guess I was expecting/hoping for a more… intricate ability out of M. But then when you think about it, this ability is actually rather broken, when you consider that Gerard’s head was literally minced up and his body shortly afterwards – his head, the one sure way to actually kill anybody in this manga. Maybe I’d rather if growing in size was just one facet of his ability, like he could grow in response to one thing, maybe get faster in response to something else, etc. More situation specific changes, perhaps, like how Shinji wanted to get past and Gerard’s cape grew to stop him. Regardless, it’s a pretty tough ability to work around. Still though, I don’t get how he was laid out after what Nimaiya did to him, but he’s up and kicking after what Byakuya did. Maybe the Auswahlen boosted the amount of damage he can come back from. Maybe I just won’t think too hard about it… Anyway, despite what I remember saying about Byakuya earlier this week, about how he bores me , it was cool seeing how he handled things this chapter(although I stand by my thought that he could well’ve stayed dead). If more villains displayed that kind of efficiency battles would certainly be a lot more tense. But anyway, that’s the way to do things. As for how to beat Gerard, I could see Shinji’s Bankai being able to reverse… something. I’d have said reversing damage given/taken would make sense, but Shunsui already pulled that. But also, if it were as simple as Shinji’s Bankai ending it right away that would kind of fly in the face of how the other ESR got dealt with, it would be way too easy.

First, we get some more Shunsui and Nanao, both reeling from their fight against one of God’s chosen. I like these few pages quite a bit and, as someone who worried that Kubo would start killing off female characters for drama more consistently, I’m glad to see our heroine battered but unbroken. Thankfully, we get our two most recent protagonists taking a much needed break after defeating so mighty a foe. And then things get strange. Lille’s dispersed self rains down upon the Soul Society, and as Lille rains, some stay dry while others get atomized by his temper tantrum. Lille turns briefly into a doughnut before realizing that he has lost his halo, meaning he is now longer one of God’s chosen (an owl), so he is now merely a chicken. Don’t worry, I have lines for that too. Honestly though, sure it was a little anticlimactic, I actually liked Lille’s quiet defeat last week, but all of the weight it may have had has been drained by a chicken army of him showing up in SS. Following that, Lille’s head turns into a disc, and starts to spin and fire off explosives in all directions. Next, one chicken becomes many, and the numerous giant chickens march across soul society, and the elder beings sing from their crystal prisons in the abyss beyond time, the lullaby that is the screams of all life, both solar and subatomic is all that keeps them in their slumber.

After that, he’s been acting calm. And let’s be fair here, being hit with Shunsui’s Bankai is probably an irritating experience. He’s been completely out of his mind, sure, but he’s been calm. So for the people who didn’t want to see a Quincy die going nuts, well if Lille just died then he died with what was in my opinion kind of a cool comment. Lille’s angelic abilities were definitely impressive. But if this fight is over then no questions regarding Lille’s strange transformation have been answered. I think I want the fight to be over, I would actually like a brief flashback on this guy telling us something about Volstandigs. I also want to know more about Shunsui’s relationship with his zanpakuto and if his Bankai’s story is simply a play or if it’s something he or someone he knew actually experienced. If the fight ended here, it was overall decent. Until Lille transformed into an owl dragon it was awesome. After that, it wasn’t bad, but it felt more like Shunsui and Nanao having a flashback and running away from Lille while he wreaks havoc than an actual fight. Not a bad ending to the fight, but not an amazing one. Could’ve been bad if Nanao effortlessly one-shotted Lille, thankfully she struggled quite a bit.

I can deal with the nanao sword bit. As far as I can tell the manga has given some measure of context for this to kinda fit. We know through renji that being told the name of your bankai by someone else is enough to call out to it, provided your sword accepts you. And this is a freaking bankai, the greatest form of mastery when it comes to zampakuto.

With nanao the situation is that she could have easily already been told everything about the sword. It’s a family heirloom which has been passed down in her family. So it’s abilities are not a secret, they are something that should be well known to a number of people. And shunsui told nanao the name of the sword. All of this easily accounts for nanao using it perfectly. And so far it doesn’t seem like the sword has a set of complicated abilities or anything. It just does its thing, like so many other zampakuto around. As far as the relationship between nanao and shunsui, I don’t think it itself is being “forced”. We knew thanks to kubo there was a woman to whom the kimono belonged to at least. So the woman being a connection between the two of them is not that weird. The issue is just how underwhelming the whole thing is. It barely even pertains directly to shunsui. Shunsui was a bystander in his own backstory. He had a brother with whom he didn’t get along but after he married he started handing out at his place. Then for things unrelated to shunsui he died. Then because of more stuff unrelated to shunsui he ended up with the sword. Then shunsui was merely told nanao’s mom was executed offscreen. To which he didn’t really react. Then shunsui complains about people trusting him with stuff and people disappearing. Shunsui might as well have grabbed a have grabbed a bucket of popcorn and watched life unfold around him, it’s not like he contributed anything to it (or at least the one bit of backstory we have about him).

I would not be surprised if this is what one of the “Divine Armaments” of the Shihouin Clan is – the Shihouin Clan Zanpakuto passed down through generations, and Yoruichi’s Zanpakuto as a result. That would definitely explain why we have not seen Yoruichi with her Zanpakuto at any point in the series – it was left at home with the Shihouin Clan.

If Shunsui inherited this sword via a promise to Nanao’s mother, then why doesn’t Nanao have a sword of her own? If Shunsui took the sword from Nanao’s mother on her death bed and vowed to never use it, then shouldn’t Nanao have needed to form her own bond with a new Asauchi? Or are we supposed to believe Shunsui let her carry around her mother’s sword during Shinigami Academy for training purposes, and then cruelly demanded it back after she graduated? Lille’s characterization isn’t very good and his character design is silly. Katen Kyokotsu’s characterization is odd as well. Yet another Sternritter who acts insane the more the War goes on.

I don’t know why most Sternritters are characterized that way. It’s just no where near the level that Kubo is capable of. His characterization in previous Arcs is so much better that it’s hard to believe that Kubo is the one writing the Thousand Year Blood War Arc. Yet another plot twist just for the sake of a plot twist. We’ve already had so many absurd plot twists and power ups in the Thousand Year Blood War Arc, and to have one involving Kyoraku and Nanao would be especially disappointing. I’ll wait to see Kubo explain Katen Kyokotsu before I give my full opinion on it, but for now it doesn’t seem to make much sense and I don’t see how it could. It also seems like we may be getting another random silly power up for a Vice Captain. So what, are all the Vice Captains going to be more powerful than all the Captains or at least Captain level? I am interested in seeing the storylines about Kyoraku and Nanao, but Kyoraku is many hundreds of years older than Nanao, so would that type of relationship between them even make much sense?

if Shunsui’s Bankai is indeed based on said type of japanese drama, then why is the fourth act the final one? Or are four act quite commonplace there? I think the answer may give a good indication of how long this fight will go on and who will win. If the answer is four, than it means, the next chapter will be last. The title would probably be something like “Theatre Suicide Scene 4 “Final Scene”” and as things look right now and probably end in Lille’s victory. But while things look more like the five-act structure of the classical drama, Shunsui’s Bankai is imo too deeply routed in japanese culture and I’m not sure how much weight the antique drama holds there. The fifth “Theatre Suicide” would be the conclusion of the battle and probably end in Shunsui’s victory then. From what I’ve heard and read so far, that seems the most likely conclusion. Now the fact, that Shunsui’s Bankai has only four acts, whith the fourth even been called the final act, makes me suspicious, whether or not the battle could end in the fourth scene and possibly with Lille’s victory (that the number four is associated with death doesn’t help.)

Bleach 649 From what we’ve seen, Shunsui Bankai is dangerous. He had to pull away from the others so they wouldn’t get caught up in it, he has to gauge the use of it based on his foe and those around him. He is pretty much saying that his opponent is to strong for anyone other than himself to survive the duration it would take to kill Lille. His apology to Nanao is proof enough in that thought because he knows that with her trapped within his bankai it’s possible she’ll die. So honestly, I don’t think it’s underwhelming at all when you consider the knowledge he had to use to make sure he could use it without getting any comrades caught up in it, if anything Ichigo and Askin were barely away from the radius of the bankai which honestly would measure the range better if we had a clear indication of where they currently are compared to Shunsui. That’s the thing though, you can’t see how “overwhelming” his bankai is because he’s knowledgeable enough to use it in a manner that wouldn’t make it so destructive. Such as If he just used bankai and let his comrades fend for themselves, that be pretty messed up. Though there may still be some parts left to it, if this bankai were to just end with that last ability he used then Kubo would of ended it in that chapter. Having it last another chapter means there may be more to come or we will see a backstory of Shunsui’s despair and maybe even Nanao being trapped within the bankai since she is the only other aside from those fighting Gerard that didn’t react to the bankai and Nanao should be in the bankai if she was chasing after Shunsui.
